HOLLAND PARADOX
With the introduction of nitro powders in the late 19th century, case labels for many sporting guns and rifles began to be furnished with careful loading instructions. This label is from the case lid of a hammerless 12-bore Holland & Holland Nitro Paradox. It gives precise loads of powder, shot and ball for sportsmen loading for themselves. We can assume most Paradox purchasers were heading overseas. The measurement for Schultze powder of 42 grains is supplemented with a black powder alternative of three drams of powder, for loading shot cartridges. For bullets (or ball) the recommendation is for 30 grains of Revolver Cordite. Instructions for bullet making and case preparation are also included. To modern reloaders of old firearms, guidance like this from the maker, written at the time of purchase, is invaluable. DH
