When the old profession­als were hunting them for the London market, they were considered the wildest of wild geese. I think they are clever, and just like mallard they adapt to circumstan­ces; nowt is more wily than a mallard on a regularly shot shore, and yet they are as tame as you like in a town park.

If we had the brent back on the quarry list, and I cannot think of a scientific reason why we should not, I reckon they would get pretty challengin­g very quickly. Also, having retrieved and eaten one that had been tossed away by another wildfowler, I’d say they are far
