CUTTING THE FABRIC

Step one Trim down your fat quarters to 50cm (20in) wide x 47cm (18½in) long.

Step two The bottom edge of the flap will be the bottom edge of the fabric. Place it this way around so the print wraps around correctly. Round off the bottom two corners.

Step three Repeat this to round off two corners on the lining fabric.

ASSEMBLING THE LAYERS

Step one Place the lining fabric right sides (RS) down then lay the wadding on top with the outer fabric RS up on top of that.

Step two Pin all three layers together then trim the wadding so it is level with the fabric edges all the way around.

Step three Work a machine zigzag around the outside edge to hold the layers together.

Step four The fabrics and wadding are quilted using straight lines of machine stitching. To do this, work straight lines down the fabric using the side of the presser foot as a guide to keep the lines straight and evenly spaced.

PREPARING THE TOP AND SIDES

Step one Fold the binding around the long straight edge at the opposite side to the flap and topstitch into place. Step two Fold the bound edge up by 15cm (6in) and press to form the pouch.

Step three Stitch the fold in place down both sides just 5mm (¼in) from the edge.

MAKING A BUTTON LOOP

Step one Cut an 8cm (3in) piece of bias binding and topstitch down the length.

Step two Fold it in half and stitch across the top into a point to make a loop.

Step three Pin then tack the ends of this loop to the centre of the lining side of the flap, matching raw edges.

BINDING THE EDGES

Step one Starting at the bottom of one side of the case, fold the binding around the case, up the side, around the flap and down the other side, turning the short ends under.

Step two Topstitch the binding in place.

ADDING A BUTTON AND BOW

Step one Fold the flap over and mark where the loop meets the case section, then stitch a button in this position.

Step two Cut a 35cm (14in) piece of bias binding and fold and topstitch down the length. Now tie it into a small bow and stitch it onto the front of the flap as a finishing decorative touch.
