The cold Boston winters are no match for Cashmerette pattern designer Jenny Rushmore’s timeless duffle coat.

“MY FAVOURITE THING I’ve ever sewn is my navy blue duffle coat! I’ve always wanted a Paddington Bear-inspired winter coat, but I could never find one in stores that was high-quality and that fit me well. So when independent pattern brand Grainline Studio (www.grainlinestu came out with the Cascade Coat pattern, I knew I had to have it!

I took great care to find really high-quality wool, interfacing and notions, and learned how to add a Thinsulate insulated layer to give me a bit more warmth in the Boston winters.

I discovered to my pleasure that the size 18 fit me well (although my measurements were bigger than suggested, there was enough ease in the pattern for it to fit me), and then I spent my time sewing it carefully.

The instructions are great so it came together easily, although I was glad to have a powerful sewing machine that could go through lots of layers of wool.

I also added a few of my own little touches, like a bias trim in the facing, coordinated zipper band and hanging hook made from tartan as a nod to my Scottish upbringing, and a toggle closure for the full Paddington look.

When I wear my coat I feel stylish, comfy and warm, and I love the hidden secrets!“
