Neptune is well placed at the start of December. On the 1st it reaches its highest point due south in true darkness around 18:20 UT. However, its situation soon deteriorates, moving farther to the west of south after the 6th, and consequently lower in the sky. At month end Neptune is mag. +7.9 and can be found 0.5º south of mag. +3.7 Lambda (h) Aquarii. A 33%-lit waxing crescent Moon lies 2.8º to the southwest of the planet in the early evening on 24 December.
