Nep­tune is well placed at the start of De­cem­ber. On the 1st it reaches its high­est point due south in true dark­ness around 18:20 UT. How­ever, its sit­u­a­tion soon de­te­ri­o­rates, mov­ing far­ther to the west of south af­ter the 6th, and con­se­quently lower in the sky. At month end Nep­tune is mag. +7.9 and can be found 0.5º south of mag. +3.7 Lambda (h) Aquarii. A 33%-lit wax­ing cres­cent Moon lies 2.8º to the south­west of the planet in the early evening on 24 De­cem­ber.
