NASA’s OSIRIS-REx space­craft has had its first glimpse of its fu­ture home, the as­ter­oid Bennu. It took the im­age from 2.3 mil­lion km away as it be­gan its fi­nal ap­proach.

“Right now, Bennu looks just like a star, a point source. That will change in Novem­ber, when we will be­gin de­tailed ob­ser­va­tions and we’ll start see­ing craters and boul­ders,” says Carl Her­gen­rother, leader of the work­ing group for OSIRIS-REx. The space­craft is due to ar­rive at Bennu on 3 De­cem­ber.
