Racing cyclist will have his ups and downs taking part in world record attempt

-

ASIDE from policing, Mr Gibson opened up on his personal life and what he enjoys doing when not dealing with the stresses of a high ranking officer.

He said: “I live with my wife Sarah, my two daughters and a golden retriever who is very spoilt and is probably the boss of the house. In terms of hobbies, I can talk about cycling forever. I’m a racing cyclist. I’ve done it since I was 11 years old and actually joined a Gainsborough club back in the day.

“I do all sorts of things from mountain biking to gravel to road and time trials. I’m actually doing a world record attempt in June which is a group ‘Everesting’ event. You go up and down the same hill 68 times, I’ll be going up one in Derbyshire, and you ascend 29,029 feet.

“It’s whether 50 people can do it as a joint endeavour. There was an attempt on it last year and I came seventh out of everybody but not everyone finished so we didn’t get the record. It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done on a bike.”

When asked his favourite things about the county of Lincolnshire, he said: “I think the countryside is beautiful. The city and the cathedral are fantastic. While I’ve been away, I’ve been working for the East Midlands Special Operations Unit which means I’ve come back either for professional purposes or to visit family.

“When I drive the roads around Lincolnshire it just feels like home and that was a very strong draw.”

Mr Gibson studied genetics at university and gained a doctorate in molecular medicine. He started his policing career as a bobby on the beat in Grantham before joining CID as a detective in 2000.

He climbed the ranks and was appointed as the force’s temporary Assistant Chief Constable before departing in 2018 to gain further experience working in the larger force of Derbyshire. Mr Gibson took on the role as Deputy Chief Constable of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) in January 2021 and served two successful months supporting Northamptonshire as temporary chief constable last year.
