Port’s unbeaten streak halted by Chalvey Sports

-

Jack Woodbridge’s late header wasn’t enough to keep Holyport’s unbeaten streak going as they went down to a 2-1 defeat against Chalvey Sports at Summerleaze Village on Tuesday evening.

Port came into the clash off the back of their 1-1 draw with Wokingham & Emmbrook in the league on Saturday, and Derek Sweetman’s side looked on course for another positive result in the first half, when Chalvey’s Matteo Giacobbe pulled off a terrific save to keep the sides level at the break.

However, The Stabmonks turned defence into attack after the interval and Tom Williams broke the deadlock just four minutes after the restart with a lob over Fred Chapman.

Williams then turned provider for a well-taken second goal from Jason Marney in the 77th minute. Holyport needed to dig deep to get back in the game, and they were rewarded for their efforts when Woodbridge headed past Giacobbe to halve the deficit with three minutes left on the clock.

But, with time ticking away, the hosts were unable to salvage a point their overall play might just have deserved as they sent a header over the bar in the closing seconds, much to the agony of the home side’s supporters and the visitors’ relief.

On Saturday, Port took the lead in the opening stages through Alan Akerman before being pegged back from the penalty spot in the 36th minute. Woodbridge was also sent off late in the game. The results leave Port in fourth place ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) home game with leaders Risborough Rangers. Tuesday’s win over Holyport lifts Chalvey Sports up to sixth place in the Hellenic 1 East. Matt Young’s side host bottom placed Abingdon Town tomorrow (Saturday).
