Cooper’s side hold runaway league leaders to a draw
Windsor boss Mark Cooper was full of praise for the maturity shown by his players as his young side managed to snatch a deserved point from league leaders Westfields on Saturday.
Billy Montague opened the afternoon’s scoring with an instinctive finish in the 38th minute before Ben Hayes fired the visitors back on level terms just before the break.
After the match Cooper said his players were fired up to try and cause an upset, and this was an impressive result for the Royalists against a side who remain unbeaten and have dropped just eight points all season.
“Considering they’re (Westfields) top of the league by a country mile we’re obviously pleased with a point,” said Cooper.
“I thought it was a very competitive game and if you had watched it without knowing the league table, I believe you wouldn’t have known who was top and who was in the middle of the table.
“The average age of our squad was 22 today and that is including Coyney (Paul Coyne) who’s 34.
“We’ve got a young side but I think the maturity of the performance was really good. We made really good decisions and we were very tenacious. We had a bit of quality about us and it was very pleasing.”
Cooper added: “We said we’d try to go on and win the game. Certainly in the second half, we tried to play a different way.
“Westfields have obviously got quality and they were going to get chances (in the second half). But I didn’t think we were hanging on at any stage.
“I thought we were terrific.”
