Singh Sabha battle back to beat KS Gryf and reach Norfolkian Cup final

-

Singh Sabha Slough are through to the Maidenhead Norfolkian Cup final for the second year running after coming from behind to beat KS Gryf 2-1 last week. Substitute Naheer Nawaf rose from the bench to score the side’s late winner and earn Sabha a precious win over their EBFL Premier Division rivals.

Sabha were in confident mood heading into the game and have had a good cup record against Gryf in recent seasons. However, Gryf had beaten them in their recent league encounter so would also have been feeling good about their chances.

Sabha went closest in the early stages when Mubarak Bashir was played through on goal but his chip bounced the wrong side of the post.

There was a huge let-off for Sabha when Gryf striker Karol Dewerenko missed a big opportunity, but the warning signs weren’t heeded and a few minutes later Gryf’s winger netted from a tight angle to make it 1-0.

Sabha responded immediately when Bashir cut the ball back for Hassan Mahmood to fire home from close range. The momentum then swung their way and in the final 10 minutes striker Umar Riaz flicked on a long ball for Nawaf who took a touch before planting the ball firmly past the Gryf keeper. The goal sent Sabha’s players and fans into wild celebrations and, in the aftermath, they missed two great opportunities to wrap up the win.

They almost paid for it in stoppage time but the impressive Andrei Tonca made a great save to preserve their lead. Sabha return to league action on Sunday when they host FC Beaconsfield.

W Singh Sabha's TVSFL squad also advanced in the Roy Lester Cup, beating FC Beaconsfield 3-1 with goals from Naheer Nawaf, Hassan Mahmood and Pritpal Raju.
