Manny makes Rebels return after Blues exit

-

Manny Williams returned to Slough Town this week to take on a coaching role following his surprise departure from Burnham FC.

Williams stood down from his role as Burnham's player manager last week with Blues'chairman Glenn Skivington saying they'd mutually decided to go in different directions.

The timing of his departure came as a surprise to many with Williams having led the Blues away from the foot of the table with a string of positive results before the side lost heavily to Abbey Rangers and Hanworth Villa either side of the new year. Slough have acted swiftly to add Williams to their coaching set up and he'll be working alongside current player/coach Lee Togwell. Primarily his focus will be on improving Slough's young, talented - but inexperienced forward line - however, he'll also sign National League forms enabling him to play if required.

Reflecting on the club's decision to bring Williams back to the club, joint manager Jon Underwood said: “We'd been in contact with Manny and he'd recently left Burnham.

“We just felt he was going to be a really good person to have around the place. He's very experienced, is loved at the club and is respected by the players.

“When you look at our coaching team you have me and Neil (Baker), ex-centre halves, and Lee Togwell who is a defensive midfielder and centre half by trade, so we just felt having a different person to compliment what we've got, but who is also a great character, would help to freshen up how we do things going into the second half of the season.

“We saw he'd left Burnham, picked up the phone to find out what happened and to make sure he's ok. It was very clear he wanted to stay in the game. It wasn't pre-planned, but it was also a quick decision. It became clear that Manny would love the opportunity to be involved and we felt it might be a good time to have another face around the place. It's just timing but that's football.”
