Voters head to the polls
SLOUGH: Voters headed to the polls yesterday (Thursday) at the local elections to have their say following a turbulent year at the council.
The Labour-run authority has been battling a financial crisis which has seen a ban on non-essential spending and the need to make millions of pounds worth of cuts to save its budget.
A total of 14 seats were up for grabs in Thursday’s vote this week – meaning that Labour will remain in control over the forthcoming year no matter the outcome of the vote.
But the vote was still a significant one given Slough Borough Council’s cash troubles, with the local authority set to switch to ‘all-out’ elections in May 2023, which will see every seat contested.
Opposing parties have set out to the Express their plans to hold the Labour group accountable for the financial crisis if elected, while the ruling administration has promised to heal the wounds inflicted on the council.
The Royal Borough does not have an election this year but will do next May, when all of its seats in Windsor and Maidenhead will be contested.
