Waste disposal for small projects is now free in Chalvey
DIY waste from small-scale projects can now be disposed of at Chalvey Household Waste Recycling Centre for free.
In November 2022, Slough Borough Council (SBC) announced new charges at the recycling centre in which residents would need to pay a fee for disposing of waste from DIY and building work.
The charges would range from £3.20 to £26.50.
However, from Monday, January 1, the council announced that residents can now dispose of DIY waste from small-scale projects for free.
Residents can now dispose of two lots of 50litre bags of DIY waste and one large item of DIY waste (about the size of a shower screen or a bath tub) for free.
A total of four visits can be made by residents during one month, the council added on its website.
The change is part of a Government initiative which has stopped charging for households to dispose of small scale DIY waste at council recycling centres.
Slough councillor Gurcharan Manku (Con, Langley St Mary’s) said the authority hopes that the change will see residents ‘continue to be responsible in the way they dispose of their waste’.
Cllr Manku, the lead member for the environment, environmental services, and open spaces, said: “This is part of a national government initiative to stop charges for disposing of household waste.
“We hope residents will continue to be responsible in the way they dispose of their waste, taking it to our recycling facilities and not flytipping it on the street.
“There will still be charges for commercial disposal.”
The council asks residents to check lists before coming to the centre as there may be conditions on certain materials, and items may be refused.
Chalvey Household Waste Recycling Centre is open from Monday to Sunday,
9am to 5pm from October 1 to March 31 in the winter and from Monday to Sunday, 9am to 6pm from April 1 to September 30 in the summer.
Last entry into the recycling centre is 15 minutes before closing time.
