St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School has been rated ‘Outstanding’ in all areas by Ofsted in a report that praised the school’s kind and inclusive community.

The education watchdog published its findings on Monday following a two-day visit to the Langley Road school in November.

It was the first time an inspection had been carried out at St Bernard’s since 2011 and inspectors heaped praise on the school’s ‘drive for excellence’ and strong focus on mental health support for youngsters.

The report said: “Pupils strongly demonstrate the school values of love, forgiveness and compassion.

“They seek to help others in and out of lessons and there is a warm and calm atmosphere across the school.”

The report added: “A strong focus on mental health and wellbeing helps pupils know how to take care of themselves and support others.”

Inspectors said teachers at St Bernard’s demonstrated an ‘expert knowledge’ and noted a rich culture of reading existed across the school.

Pupils with special educational needs or disabilities are well taught at St Bernard’s, the report added.

Sixth form students were described as role models for younger pupils while the report said sixth form students developed the life skills needed to flourish once they finish their education.

Pupils at St Bernard’s talk knowledgably about their views on local and national issues and have a deep understanding of cultural influences, healthy relationships and British values, the report noted.

Headteacher Paul Kassapian told the Express: “To be Outstanding in every aspect is something only a small minority of schools have been able to achieve.

“It’s really important for us to recognise this is a good news story for Slough, Slough pupils and Slough schools. We’re delighted to be part of that community.”

He added: “St Bernard’s has been around a long time, we’ve got a fantastic building which is really interesting, quite quirky, and lots of people come and see the school and think it’s a bit like Hogwarts to be honest.

“The pupils are our best ambassadors and I’m really proud of their achievements.”
