Hundreds of athletes strive to make positive start at annual indoor event

Windsor, Slough, Eton, and Hounslow (WSEH) Athletics Club held its annual ndoor Spring Open Meeting at the Thames Valley Athletics Centre in Eton on Sunday last week (January 7), with athletes from across the area striving to make a positive start to their track and field season.

In the first event, WSEH’s Anouska Wedrychows­ki won the U20 Women’s 60m hurdles in 9.32secs, with Jasmine Hatch not far behind in 9.43secs.

Zara Powell was the first WSEH member to cross the line in the u17s Women’s race, finishing in 9.94secs, closely followed by Poppy Batchelor in 10.14secs and Daisy Toft in 10.39secs.

The best in the u15s girls’ race was

Freya Thorpe in 10.13secs, while Max Zhang was a clear winner of the u13s boys’ event in 11.16secs.

The hurdles were then pushed to the sides for the 60m flat races, with Fami Awg winning the senior men’s event in 7.18secs.

This was then bettered by Otis Iwin in the u20s men’s event in 6.98secs.

The u17s men’s event saw Jack Hawkes take top spot in 7.15secs, while Alex Lai-Cheong leading the way in the u15s boy’s event with 7.16secs. Max Zhang was again fastest of the u13s boys, finishing in 8.69secs.

The senior women’s race was won by

Esther Egharevba in 8.39secs with Ana Bais leading the way in the u20s age group race in 8.05secs. This was bettered by Grac Sikora in the u17s event who clocked 8.03secs, while the top u15s girl was Lily Bailey in 8.50secs and Leila Asbelaoui led the way at u13s level winning in 9.60secs.

Just two field events were staged, the long jump and the pole vault, with several WSEH athletes impressing in both discipline­s.

Jack Staunton finished second in the senior men’s pole vault after clearing 4.20m, while Lillianna Jervis-Allan finished clear of the field in the u17s women’s event after topping 3.40m.

Erin Rees was the best of the u20s women, with a clearance of 3.20m and

Lilliane Orywal-Sykes made it a clean sweep for WSEH in the u17s age group after she cleared 2.70m, followed by Jess Slater on 2.50m and Olivia Kraus also on 2.50m. Jack Eames and Max McCuaig collected top points for WSEH’s u17s men after clearing 2.50m and 2.40m respective­ly, while Daisy Capp topped the u15s girls competitio­n with a clearance of 2.30m.

In the long jump, Mia Woodley won the u20s women’s event with a leap of 5.01m, while Alex Warnes won the u17s men’s event with a jump of 5.39m.

Emillie Edwards was the best of WSEH’s entrants in the u17s women’s event with 4.85m and while Thomas Cucheval was the club’s best in the u15s boys’ event with 4.67m.
