Second half fight back keeps ‘nice little run going’
Manager Ben Murray admitted Burnham weren't really at the races in the first half of Saturday's 1-1 draw with Wallingford & Crowmarsh, however, he saw a big improvement from the Blues as the match wore on and says the point isn't a bad one as it keeps the side's 'nice little run going'.
After moving into the play-off places with back-to-back victories over Broadfields United and Edgware & Kingsbury, the Blues would have expected better from their trip to the league's 18th placed side.
However, Murray was under no illusions as to how tough the match might be and in the end he was relatively relieved to see Samad Kazi's second half goal cancel out a first half strike from former Burnham player Aiden Higgs. The Blues had lost 3-1 on their previous trip to Wallingford and while this result sees them drop out of the top five, they're just a point behind fifth-placed Milton United with a game in hand.
Asked if Saturday's result had been a setback, Murray said: “Yes and no to that. They played well and caused us issues over at their place last year. They beat us 3-1, so their home form is much better.
“We weren't at the races first half and second half we were much better and probably should have won the game, but we'll take a point over there and it keeps our nice little run going.
“Every game we play, it's always very difficult. It doesn't matter what league you play in. Often especially when teams are down at the bottom and chasing teams at the top. It gives them a bit more motivation.
“There's never any easy games and Saturday proved that.”
He added: “We don't have a game on Saturday because Southall are playing at home. They ground share with us and because they're in the league above they get precedence.
“So, we now have a nice little break and five training sessions to prepare ourselves for Bedfont away on Saturday week (January 27).
“We can use the 3G at Burnham and don't have to worry about weather which is good. It will give us a break and a chance to reset to get ourselves motivated to go on another run.
“We'll try to progress where we can on last season. Its nice to have a break to get going for the next three or four matches.”
