Rebels aim to get back on track with win over Stones

Slough Town FC: Scott Davies’ men beaten at the Bob Lucas Stadium before Tuesday’s match was put on ice

-

Scott Davies believes Slough Town ‘weren’t at the races’ as they fell to a convincing defeat to Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium at the weekend, and the player/manager was doubly frustrated his side weren’t able to ‘get back on the horse’ in mid-week as their clash with Taunton Town was postponed.

On a cold Saturday afternoon in Dorset, goals from Alfie Rutherford, Brandon Goodship, and Harry Parsons delivered Bobby Wilkinson’s men a 3-0 victory, the result lifting the side into 19th place in the National League South table.

The Rebels, meanwhile, stayed 13th and were optimistic they were going to get back to winning ways against Rob Dray’s Peacocks on Tuesday night but, due to a frozen pitch, the game was cancelled.

Reflecting on the loss to the Terras, Davies said: “It’s frustrating. I think it was the first time in a long time that we weren’t at the races. We faced a team that was full of heart, passion, and desire and for the first time in a few months, we didn’t match it.

“We are a team that regularly gets praised for the way that we play, our intensity in matches. But, Weymouth just managed to be a little bit better than us on the day.

“I don’t think 3-0 is a fair scoreline we had plenty of chances. I’ve looked at our stats this week and we had more shots than them.

“It is one of those frustrating results that you can’t dwell on for too long. You have to move on from it quickly because it’s out of character for us, a result like that. We’ve been extremely competitive in the last few months, so

it is just one of those bad days at the office.”

Davies added: “I’m very much the kind of person that after a defeat, I want my team to get back on the horse and ride it again. I was looking forward

to Tuesday night, I thought it was an opportunity to go and get a positive result off the back of Saturday. But, in the grand scheme of things, we’ve only got a small squad, we’ve had a lot of matches and we’ve got a lot of matches coming up. A postponement probably isn’t the worst thing in the world.”

Slough Town face Maidstone United on Saturday and will be aiming to extend their unbeaten run at Arbour Park to 15 matches.

The Rebels started their 2023/24 National League South season with a 2-1 defeat to the Stones at the Gallagher Stadium.

“Regardless of the result before and the result on Saturday against Weymouth, we are going into this weekend full of confidence,” said Davies.

“I think September 2 was the last time we lost at home. We know that run is going to have to come to an end at some point, you’re never going to go unbeaten forever, but we are definitely looking at Saturday as a chance to turn things around from last weekend.

“We’ve got an almost fully fit squad to choose from. I think Leon (Chambers-Parillon) is the only one that has got a slight knock. We’ve got good midfield cover in that area so we should be okay. I am really looking forward to what should be a good game in front of the home fans.”

On the Rebels’ league position, Davies added: “We have put ourselves in a brilliant place for now to make sure we do retain our National League status. I think at this stage, with a 12point gap, we have only got ourselves to blame if we end up getting relegated.

“Things have changed very quickly, in a matter of weeks in fact, regarding where we were to where we are now. That is something we are extremely proud of but we don’t want the season to fizzle out. We want to try and finish as strongly as we can.”
