Respite for the homeless this winter

-

A Windsor based charity offering support to homeless people and a respite from the cold during winter months has opened the doors to its new home.

Windsor Homeless Project is now based at the new Alma Beacon building in Alma Road, which opened on December 4.

Through the new building, it runs several programmes to help those affected by homelessness and is currently hosting a wam hub three times a week offering a heated space and hot food.

The project comes under arm of Christian Action UK at the Alma Beacon building, with Windsor Street Angels and Windsor Foodshare also using it.

Windsor Homeless Project manager Nick Roberts said: “Our team have always been looking to make sure we have had a place for people to come and go out of the cold.

“People can come and have a chat, get in the warm and have a little two course meal as well.”

Last month, when temperatures plummeted, Nick said eight people took advantage of the warm hub at Alma Beacon on one evening.

Those needing specialised support were advised to attend its day sessions for more help.

Discussing other options available for homeless people Nick said that Windsor Homeless Project was working with the Brett Foundation, a Maidenhead based charity similarly focused on helping those in poverty, to find a permanent shelter.

While discussions are ongoing, he added that the project was still on the look out for public help.

Nick said: “We always try and do as much as possible, now we have got the keys to our own place it’s just a question of how much manpower you can get to help with it.”

Warm hub sessions are run from 7-9pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays through till March.
