Midfielder Lench not afraid to talk up Rebels’ play-off chances after win

-

Slough Town midfielder Matty Lench is certainly feeling positive about the Rebels' chances of making the play-offs this season after scoring their opener in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Weston-Super-Mare.

The Rebels’ midfielder hasn’t had his most prolific season in the amber and blue, however, Saturday’s first half strike was an important one and put the hosts on the path to a relatively comfortable home win.

For a man who hasn’t found the net as often as he’d have liked this season, Lench was calmness personified as he ran onto Nathan Minhas’ pass in the 27th minute and steered home a shot via the inside of the near post.

Lench also had a hand in the home side’s second, swinging in a lovely corner in the 49th minute that Jeanmal Prosper stooped to head home, and the Rebels than subdued any hopes of a Weston comeback with some disciplined defending. The win lifts the Rebels to 12th in the table

– and just four points off the play-off places – ahead of next weekend’s trip to Torquay United, one of their rivals for a top seven spot.

After the final whistle,

Lench wasn’t afraid to talk up the Rebels’ hopes of a late charge for the play-offs, and his manager Scott Davies will be hoping that infectious enthusiasm and belief rubs off on others.

“Oh yeah absolutely, roll on the play-offs, I say,” he said. “Nine more wins and we’ll be there.”

Two away defeats on the spin at Dover and Yeovil Town had just put the brakes on the Rebels recent run up the National League South table, but Saturday’s win puts them back on track and extends their unbeaten run at Arbour Park to 16 matches.

On the side’s dominant, disciplined – almost routine – win over Weston, Lench added:

“It’s been a long time coming, scoring a goal. But we’re very happy, it’s a great win for us today so we’re very pleased.

“We did alright today. Last week down in Dover, that was a difficult loss. We shouldn’t have lost that so we had to win today. Yeovil was a free hit for us, obviously, they’re a good side and are as strong as they come. But we had to turn it around today, and we did what we said that we’d do, so yeah, it’s great.”
