Hundreds turned out for the first Lunar New Year celebrations in Windsor town centre at the weekend.

Crowds lined Windsor Royal Station on Saturday, eagerly awaiting a traditional performance by the Maidenhead-based Eagle Claw Kung Fu School UK. Established in 1997, around 36 performers from the school brought its Lion Dance parade to the royal town to mark the Year of the Dragon.

The high-energy Chinese cultural event featured four lions and ribbon-twirling dragons and was complete with thunder drumming and Chinese firecrackers.

Eagle Claw Kung Fu School UK director Julian Dale told the Express: “Members of the School practice all year round for this event, investing a huge amount of time and energy for an event which is enjoyed and loved by our school.

“[The] team pulled out all the stops to create another fantastic parade, with twirling Dragon ribbons, lions, musicians, flags and banners, the Big Happy Buddha and Chinese God of Wealth.

“The crowds were wowed by the parade. Excitement was through the roof with children and adults from all walks of life being thrilled by the music and lions.”

The convoy made its way through the shopping centre amongst more than 600 people lining the concourse.

Town centre visitors also had the chance to take part in free Chinese New Year-themed workshops, run by community interest company, Craft Coop.

Council leader Cllr Simon Werner added: “We’re very fortunate in the Royal Borough to have several communities who mark Lunar New Year.

“The lion dance through town and associated crafts are a fun and colourful opportunity for everyone of any age to come together to celebrate Lunar New Year and the diverse cultures represented locally. thank all those who have supported the event and wish everyone a very happy and prosperous Year of the Dragon.”
