Hearts were pounding and nerves were mounting as Windsor and Eton saw the return of its famous annual Flippin’ Pancake races.

With 18 teams and four mascots turning out it promised to be one of the largest races in the Royal Borough.

The event took place at Royal Windsor Station Shopping Centre on Tuesday and new teams to the races included Windsor Hammer aka Leisure Focus, The Cobbles of Windsor and Fortescues.

Windsor Royal Shopping Centre retail liaison manager Caron Cole said: “What a fantastic turnout of top teams today. The weather wasn't in our favour, so we went for the undercover wet weather route and the event

this year drew a crowd of more than 200 people.”

The ever-popular mascot race saw four fully costumed characters including from Thames Valley Police and the Windsor and Maidenhead Ambulance Service.

But Alexander Devine’s Deefa Dolphin took home the honours with an impressive run, proving equally adept on land as in the water.

Jeff Lloyd was master of ceremonies and heats were closely fought, with some close finishes.

Representatives from the Windsor Pie Shop scooped the gold medal while the silver medal was awarded to Cobbles of Windsor while UBX Windsor settled for bronze.

The best dressed trophy went to the Eton T-Shirt Company, and all trophies and medals were donated by

Argrave Engravers.

More than £500 raised in the event will go towards Alexander Devine Hospice Children Service and the Christmas Light Fund.

There were also pancakes on sale and available throughout the day from Windsor Creperie.

Windsor town manager Paul Roach added: “Thank you so much to the teams and all their supporters at one of our favourite events here at Windsor Royal Station, especially the Mascot Race.

“We ended up with a very competitive final, with Windsor Pie just beating C3 Studio at the post.”

The event was supported by Royal Windsor Station Shopping Centre, and Argraves engravers and organised by the Windsor, Eton and Ascot Town Partnership.
