Windsor & Eton get back on song after tricky spell

- Windsor & Eton FC

Following a tricky patch of form, Windsor & Eton got themselves back to winning ways in the Thames Valley Premier League at the weekend with a comprehensive 5-1 victory against Henley Town.

After Charlie Douglas nodded the home side into the lead, Ashley Howes (two), Fiifi Carter, Jemel Johnson, and Oliwier Bach (penalty) found the back of the net to secure Matty Angell’s men their first win of 2024 – the result lifting the side back up to second in the table.

Before Saturday, Windsor & Eton’s last triumph in the TVPL was on Saturday, November 25 when they defeated Maidenhead Town 4-0 at Stag Meadow.

Speaking to the Advertiser this week, defender Elliott Dobbs (below) said: “Everyone is buzzing to get that winning feeling back. It sounds ridiculous that our last league win was in November, but it’s been a very stopstart couple of months.

“I think everyone stuck to their job and we’ve gone back to basics. It’s difficult to play how we’d like to at this stage of the season so it's about mucking in together and avoiding mistakes.

“It’s a very young squad and it was nice that we managed to turn the game around. We have started slow too many times this season and it just causes us problems. It’s something we are looking to address. Matty has been pulling his hair out over it.

“The mood was great after the game; the changing room was buzzing. We want to keep that winning feeling and we hope to build on it, although I don’t think we have a league game for another three weeks or so. It is hard to build momentum when it’s like that.

“Before that next league game for the first team, I will be playing the TVPL Rep game at Dorking Wanderers on February 24, something I’m looking forward to.”

Windsor & Eton face Reading

YMCA at The Cauldron, Padworth Lane, in the Berkshire Trophy Centre Senior Cup quarter-final this Saturday (2pm kickoff).

“We want to win every competition we’re left in, that’s the aim, but we’re expecting another tough away game weather permitting,” Dobbs added.
