‘My heart was all over the place after late win’

Slough Town FC: Davies reacts to Leon’s injury-time winner at Torquay United

-

Scott Davies admitted his heart ‘was all over the place’ after Leon ChambersParillon’s instinctive finish earned the Rebels a stoppage-time win over Torquay United on Saturday.

In a match of fluctuating fortunes, the Rebels responded to falling behind on three occasions before taking the lead in the match for the first time in the 91st minute.

Chambers-Parillon was the man to grab the Rebels’ winner, coming on as a second half substitute to turn home Johnny Goddard’s powerful strike with just minutes left on the clock.

It brought an end to a clash which see-sawed both ways as the two play-off hopefuls throwing caution to the wind at Plainmoor.

The thrilling 4-3 away win also earned the Rebels their first ever win over the Gulls.

“It’s a really difficult one,” said player manager Scott Davies to Connor McNeish for Sloughtownfc.net

“My heart is all over the place. The emotions. I was really disappointed when it went to 2-1, I thought that was a massive turning point in the game. But low and behold, we found a way to get back into the game which is great.

“To go behind three times in the game and then end up winning it shows the character. I’ve spoken about it many times this year, what those boys give me and the management team, but also give themselves and the football club as a whole is just incredible.

“I said that the win at

Bath a few weeks ago was probably the best win we’d had. But to win today, in those circumstances, is just out of this world.

“We wanted to try and emulate last week as best we could, but obviously, no two games are the same. Joe and Eze came in for Nashy and myself. We knew that we needed to jump on the tough times that have been going on here. I don’t want to talk about it as that would be distasteful, but they’ve been on a sticky run, and we thought we might be able to quieten the crowd. We didn’t manage to do that until the latter stages of the game, but overall, it’s a massive three points. We would probably have settled for a point when it went to 3-3 but Johnny’s come up with a moment of magic, cutting in and Leon’s managed to get his foot on the end of it. I’ve not had a feeling like that in football for a long time.

“We’ve had some great wins this year, but I don’t think we’ve won in the last minute like that. We’ve been on the end of some, but I thought we got what we deserved today. I thought we were good value for it.

“Their goals were really soft, we won’t concede three worse goals this year. There’s not one brilliant goal in there. They’ve not cut us open, but I feel like we’ve done that to them. It’s a great day.”

Davies said the players were out on their feet in the changing room, having given everything to the cause. And it’s a cause that’s rapidly gaining focus, with the Rebels now just four points outside of the playoffs ahead of two home matches against Chippenham Town on Saturday and Dartford on Tuesday evening. Slough are unbeaten at home in more than five months, a run of 16 matches.

“Our home form has been great, but we’ll never allow the lads to become complacent,” he said.

“We always respect who we play, and we’ll prepare as best as we can. We know it’s going to be two tough games and we’ll have a look at them this week.

“Another reporter I spoke to a moment ago mentioned the play-off word, and I shut it down pretty quickly. I’ve said before we know where we’re at.

“We’re punching well above our weight; I think that’s fair to say. We just want to enjoy the season for as long as we can and if that takes us to the promised land of the play-offs then that's great.”
