‘Textbook hockey’ in win over Trojans

Maids are up to fifth ahead of tough clash with Oxford Hawks

-

Maidenhead’s senior women’s teams also enjoyed a break for half-term this week having claimed their eighth win of the season with a 3-1 home win over Trojans 2nds on February 10.

The women’s first team, who are currently fifth, settled into the game as it went on and took the lead thanks to a smashing hit from Sarah Fuller, who was played through by Jen Martin.

They improved massively after the interval with the hosts playing some ‘textbook hockey’ to score their second through Chantal Frost. Issy Harris-Evans, Hannah Stone and Fuller were all involved in the sweeping move before Frost found the backboard with a far post shot.

Amabel Hills scored Maidenhead’s third goal from a short corner, expertly beating the Trojans keeper with a shot that flashed into the net. With a threegoal cushion, Maidenhead were able to sit back a little and they were pegged back by a consolation goal for the visitors after Jen Martin had been shown a green card. Despite this they finished the game with real composure to stifle any hopes of a comeback.

This Saturday, they face a tough clash at second placed Oxford Hawks 2nds.

Maidenhead men’s 1sts travel to Milton Keynes 1sts this Saturday having been more competitive since the turn of the year.

The South Central Men’s Premier Division 2 bottom side picked up their first point of the season at home to Oxford Hawks 3rds a few weeks ago, but successive defeats to Wycombe 1sts (3-0) and Oxford University 2nds (5-1 at home on Saturday) have followed.

Marlow men’s 1sts have been given a helping hand through to the next round of the England Hockey Tier 2 Cup competition after their opponents pulled out of this weekend’s match.

The Reds had been due to play Royal Wootton Bassett for a place in the next stage of the national competition but have instead been given a bye.

With the league programme having a half-term break, there was no action for any of the senior men’s or women’s teams this weekend, however, most are due to return to action this Saturday.

The men’s 1st team – who currently sit sixth in the South Central Men's Premier Division 1 and still within striking distance of many of the teams above them – are away at fifth placed Bournemouth.

The women’s first team will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the South Central Women's Premier Division 1 when they visit Henley 1sts. The Reds are unbeaten so far this season having won 15 of their 16 games. They currently hold a nine-point lead over closest challengers Oxford Hawks 2nds with six matches left to play.
