Wargrave to net new player as Sturgess moves from Cornwall to Berkshire

-

Berkshire CCC have announced the signing of Tommy Sturgess from Cornwall CCC ahead of the new season.

Tommy had an excellent season for Cornwall last summer, playing a significant role in their run to the National T20 final against Staffordshire where they were pipped to silverware in a match that went down to the final ball. He has moved to the area with work and will be playing Home Counties

Cricket through the season for Wargrave CC.

Speaking about his move to Berkshire, head coach Tom Lambert said: ““Firstly, and most importantly I’d like to thank Cornwall and in particular Godfrey Furse for giving his and their blessing for Tommy to join us this summer.

“He’s a fantastic product of their pathway and someone we’re excited to now have in our set up. Tommy will be moving into our area through his job and will be playing club cricket at Wargrave CC, so discussions began on the possibility of him joining us.”

“Seam bowlers at NCCA level don’t grow on trees so we’re very fortunate to be able to welcome Tommy into our group. With Tom Nugent only available for one format moving forward it felt the right opportunity had presented itself to get Tommy on board to add experience and quality to the attack. With our young seamers continuing to develop at the Middlesex Academy under Mark Lane and Jamie Hewitt, their priority, and workloads in the main rest there for now so being able to add such quality to go alongside senior bowlers such as Tom, Andy Rishton, Toby Greatwood and Mungo Russell was vitally important for the long summer ahead where workload expectations on our lads is extremely high.”

Having excelled through each age group in Cornwall, Tommy headed to Wellington School in Somerset for his Sixth form education and from there joined the Surrey Academy where he continued his education in the game and played several 2nd XI games for the county. Last summer he was a part of Cornwall’s promotion to Western Division 1.

Lambert added: “I’ve known of Tommy since he was young and more recently on a personal level when he was part of my NCCA XI who represented England out in the ECC European Cup in October.

“He’s a brilliant competitor and great young man to work with. He wears his heart on his sleeve and works hard.”
