Girls’ teams set their sights on silverware

-

Three Maidenhead Rugby Club girls’ teams put in impressive performances over the weekend, with the club’s newly formed u18s team finishing runners up to Farnham in their league final.

All three of the teams were on the road on Sunday, with Maidenhead’s u18s partnering with Reading RFC to take on Farnham in their league final.

Maids weren’t quite able to get the better of their hosts, however, a second placed finish in their inaugural season was still a tremendous achievement.

The u14s side travelled to Southampton to play Trojans in their league semi-final clash and emerged after a gruelling 50 minutes with a 17-0 victory.

The visitors scored three tries and slotted one of their conversions while managing to prevent their hosts from scoring a single point.

They now progress to the league cup final against Havant at Braywick Park on April 21.

On that day, the club will host approximately 150 young female players from clubs across Hampshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire.

Maids face a tough final against Havant with both teams winning their respective leagues last year.

Meanwhile, over at Hungerford RFC on Sunday, the club’s u12s team faced the combined force of Reading Abbey and the West Berks Warriors, holding onto their early lead to claim a well-deserved draw.

Maids took the initiative in the early stages to run in some tries, but their opponents fought back to put the result on a knife edge and a draw was about fair on both teams.

U12s coach George Blackwell said afterwards: "I'm really proud of how well the girls are developing as a team, and particularly impressed with our four new girls who played their first Under 12s games today, they'll be an important part of this team for the foreseeable future."

The club’s u16s team wasn’t in action as they continued to prepare for their league semi-final at home to local rivals Reading this Sunday (March 9).

The girls’ section is now into its third season and has been going from strength to strength with around 70 girls playing across the four age group teams from u12s to u18s.

There are also many girls playing in the mixed minis age groups up to u12s.

The teams train every Wednesday evening at Braywick, with Sunday being game day.

New players are welcome to join at any time.
