Slough: Pupils dress up as their favourite characters
Youngsters at a Slough school had the chance to ‘show and tell’ their favourite books with creative costumes for World Book Day.
Long Close School in Upton saw pupils of all years dress up and take part in activities to celebrate reading on Friday, March 8.
The day concluded with a procession in the playground where pupils, staff and parents had a chance to show off their literary costumes.
Head of early years, Milly Carpenter, said: “It was lovely to share the day with parents, by opening our doors up for adults to join in with the fun too.
“A very special mention to the parents who dressed up for the occasion too – Harry Potter and the BFG.”
During the day, the school also engaged in a ‘DEAR’ reading experience which stood for ‘drop everything and read’ for approximately 10 minutes when the hand bell was rung.
All school years stopped and read at 11.30am which teachers described as a ‘lovely calm moment’.
Key Stage 1 students searched for hidden characters around their classrooms as part of a quiz, while Key Stage 2 children wrote their own stories and enjoyed reading related quizzes and maths challenges.
Students from nursery to reception dressed up as everything from The Gruffalo and Snow White to Marvel characters.
Headteacher Jane Straw said: "We have a proud tradition of celebrating a love of reading at Long Close School.
“From our youngest children entering nursery, through to our GCSE students developing their critical thinking skills with English literature, all our children enjoy the simple pleasure that is curling up with a good book.
“Our well-stocked library offers students a broad range of titles to choose from, and children can access that regularly throughout their time in school.
“World Book Day offers a wonderful opportunity to bring the whole school together and celebrate our favourite stories, characters and authors. We have seen some very creative costumes today, the staff have joined in as well as the students."
