Schools fight for bake-off crown
Royal Ascot theme for event at racecourse
Budding young chefs competed to rustle up a recipe for success during a schools bake-off competition at Ascot Racecourse with a royal twist.
On Monday, 14 teams from schools across Slough, the Royal Borough and Bracknell Forest, took part in the Ascot & 177
2024 Bake-Off event to see who could create the best traybake.
The theme for the event, now in its third year, was Royal Ascot – inspired by its location.
Pupils in years five to seven were asked to create a traybake fit for the occasion using locally sourced produce and a mood-board showcasing the thought process behind each design.
Jacqui Greet, corporate and social responsibility manager for Ascot Racecourse said: “It was a delight to welcome so many talented young bakers to showcase their creations today.
“Our judges were particularly impressed with the back stories that inspired the traybakes and the effort that had clearly gone into each entry.”
A judging team reviewed all the entries, hearing from each team on the process behind their design and the considering each tray-bakes taste and appearance.
Winners were eventually split into senior and junior categories and announced on the day.
Parents, carers and teachers turned out to show their support for their teams and, after the competition, all attendees were invited to enjoy afternoon tea at the racecourse.
School headteacher Anna Smith said: “We are thrilled to be part of this prestigious event which has taught the children so much about teamwork, resilience and the world of work.
“Having built this project into our curriculum, we are delighted to be taking part for the third year.”
The winning team from each category is set to appear on the menu of the Summer Mile Family Raceday on Saturday 13th July.
