HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF?
1. Say 'No' to uninvited callers.
2. Don't feel pressured into making a decision, take your time and seek advice.
3. Be wise to postal scams - no real company will ask for money to claim a prize.
4. You can also register with the Mail Preference Service.
This allows you to opt out of receiving unwanted direct mail.
5. Don't disclose personal information over the phone or online. Be suspicious of unsolicited calls. Take down the person's details and verify them.
6. You can also register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) which allows you to opt out of unwanted live sales and marketing calls to landline and mobile numbers.
7. Be online savvy - criminals can replicate genuine companies. If you are unsure, don't open links or any attachments in emails.
8. Stay safe on social media by creating strong and unique passwords for each account.
9. Keep your software and apps up to date to prevent accounts from being hacked.
10. Talk to someone that you trust if you are suspicious of anything. 11.If the person contacting you encourages you to keep their communication secret from family and friends it is more likely to be a scam.
12.If you are asked to send money abroad, or into someone else's bank account - refuse.
13.If an offer seems too good to be
true, it probably is.
14.Remember, anyone can be a scam victim. If you spot a scam, always report it.
