Labour reveals election candidate

-

Labour has become the latest party to reveal its Windsor candidate for the upcoming General Election.

Windsor will welcome a new MP at the next election for the first time in nearly 20 years when current Conservative MP Adam Afriyie stands down.

Long-standing Slough councillor and current leader of the Slough Labour Party, Pavitar Kaur Mann, is the latest name to join the race after she was confirmed as the party’s candidate for Windsor earlier this week.

Having lived in Slough for almost all her life, Ms Mann has been involved in supporting the community in many ways, including establishing the Slough apprenticeship award scheme and the Slough Youth Parliament.

Ms Mann said she is honoured to have been selected as Windsor Labour’s candidate and is ‘ready to fight for every single vote’ and take her message to residents in the new constituency, which will include parts of Langley.

Her key priorities include creating a ‘cohesive community feel within the new constituency’, flooding, water safety and water cleanliness, housing, the cost-of-living crisis, championing the armed forces, tackling crime, knife crime and anti-social behaviour and expanding opportunities for young people.

Ms Mann said that if elected she would be committed to having only one job – which would be the MP for Windsor.

Also vying for the job is Conservative candidate Jack Rankin, who was previously elected as a councillor representing central Windsor in the Royal Borough and was the youngestever cabinet member.

During that time, Mr Rankin undertook roles including chairing the Windsor Town Forum and serving as a board member for the Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

Mr Rankin says he will be ‘fully active’ ‘visible and available’ across the constituency if elected.

"We must continue Adam’s campaigns on flooding and Heathrow, and I would vote similarly to Adam against any backsliding towards the European Union,” he said on his website. “But we must also ensure that all our towns and villages have access to their Member of Parliament, who will fight day and night for their priorities.”

Current Royal Borough councillor for the Eton and Castle ward Julian Tisi will be standing for the Windsor Liberal Democrats.

An experienced chartered accountant, Mr Tisi is a long-term local campaigner, and has most recently spoken out against the dumping of sewage in the River Thames.

Mr Tisi, who came to Windsor to work for Centrica in 2002 and lives in the town with his family, is a supporter of his local community-run pub and is a governor at St Edwards Royal Free School, according to the Windsor Liberal Democrats website.

Mr Tisi’s key priorities include holding water companies to account and stopping them from pumping sewage into the water.

Opening banking hubs to improve access to cash in Windsor, is also a priority, alongside ensuring that all burglaries will be attended by the police and investigated.

Also looking to be elected is the Green Party’s Windsor candidate Michael Boyle.

Mr Boyle was raised and educated in Windsor and said it was ‘an honour’ to be chosen as the parliamentary candidate.

“One of my biggest priorities if elected is to modernise and fight for democratic reforms such as, proportional representation, so that nobody has a ‘wasted’ vote and everyone is justly and fairly represented, regardless of their political persuasion,” he said.

Amongst his other priorities in Government will be to tackle the cost-of-living crisis and campaign to ‘re-nationalise key public services in the private sector that failed to deliver economically or environmentally’ including water, electricity and public transport.

Current Royal Borough councillor for the Datchet, Horton and Wraysbury ward, David Buckley will be standing as an Independent candidate.

He announced his intention to run in November when he stood down as leader of The Borough First Independents. At the time, he said: “It is and always was my belief that independents are the only hope for residents to get their voices back and stop the regressive culture that party politics inflicts onto our democracy.”

Lawrence Petrie has also been confirmed as the Reform UK candidate for Windsor.
