A PASSENGER who tried to smuggle 12,560 cigarettes through Birmingham Airport in containers marked ‘ saucepans’ has been sentenced for excise duty fraud.

Zahoor Ahmed, 44, of Geraldine Road, Yardley, was caught with the cigarettes as he returned home on a flight from Pakistan, via Dubai, in November. Ahmed was convicted of trying to evade more than £ 4,000 of duty following an investigation by HM Revenue & Customs ( HMRC). He was handed a three- month home curfew and ordered to pay costs when he appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court.
