Somerset Life - - GARDENING -

Plant wallflowers – bundles of field grown plants are in garden centres now. Their scent in spring is amazing! Replant hanging baskets and containers with hardy plants such as pansy and viola, primroses and ivy.

Lift dahlia tubers and store frost free in barely damp compost.

Plant garlic and autumn onions now.

Strawberry runners should be planted now. If they are replacing old plants, choose a fresh site for best results.

Lift and divide herbaceous perennials, removing perennial weeds, and improving the soil with compost and fertiliser as you go. Any moving of trees and shrubs can also be done now.

Clear fallen leaves from the lawn, and aerate it with a fork to help drainage. Any leaves collected can be made into leaf mould – a valuable soil improver.

Clean your greenhouse, getting into all the corners!

Move any frost tender plants such as citrus inside now.
