From Bruton to Bath
The festive season is upon us, so why not get away from it all with a few days’ break in a Classic Cottages property
Somerset in December means festive markets and pretty villages and towns sparkling with Christmas lights. The darker days of winter don’t have to be depressing; this is a time to revel in the run-up to Christmas and perhaps plan a little holiday in the county - a few days away with a loved one or some quality time for the family to enjoy together.
One perfect place to spend time is around the ancient Saxon town of Bruton, now a thriving art and food centre with an internationally renowned gallery. Greenhills Cottage is a couple of miles down the road, set off the beaten track in a peaceful village but with a great pub in walking distance. The cottage is full of character with original beams and flagstone floors but with a modern, tasteful makeover bringing it up to date. It’s a relaxing contemporary bolthole from which to live like a local. Curl up in front of the woodburner in winter, throwing open the bi-fold doors on sunny days, and explore the woodlands and walkways around the historic hamlet before venturing into Bruton for artisanal deli food and a spot of artistic culture.
In the north of the county near Bath, Kingham Cottage is a resplendent Somerset stone cottage with exposed beams and panoramic countryside views. It’s in an idyllic location high up on the side of the valley, a perfect place to unwind at any time of year. It’s so welcoming and comfortable you may want to stay put, but you can take a day trip to historic Bath for the shopping, architecture and Roman Baths, or wander around Combe Down and pick up goodies in the deli for supper or the next day’s brunch. When you stay at Kingham, 100% of the income goes to the charity After Umbrage which provides breaks for carers of people with lifelimiting conditions.
Classic has handpicked only the best places to stay across the county, with new properties to discover in 2019 and old favourites booking up fast. There’s the chance to bring pets too, with a number of dogfriendly cottages and also houses with stables. If there are babes in arms in the party, ask about Baby Plus properties where owners have gone above and beyond to make their home-from-home as welcoming to young ones as possible. Family friendly cottages also have more than Classic’s usual generous minimum inventory, with toys and games, even computer consoles and the latest tech, to keep everyone happy. With every cottage meeting exacting standards, the Classic team wants every guest to sit back, relax and say ‘wow’ as soon as they step through the door.
