Summer festival success

-

FUN galore, music, dancing and some lovely weather helped make one suburban Cardiff festival a spectacular success.

The annual Rhiwbina summer festival saw hundreds turn up for a day of activities and laughter.

Organisers say the event, which included a special Roald Dahl centenary event, was a major success.

Sue Harding, one of the members of the organising committee, said: “Wow, what a turnout. I don’t think we’ve ever seen it so busy.

“We had enormous support from all the businesses who went all out, spilling out onto the street with competitions and activities galore, all the revellers who came, the activity providers, stalls, the festival stage local acts and live bands all created a fantastic atmosphere – and the sun shone!”

A highlight from the day was the Roald Dahl street theatre centenary event.

A first for last Saturday’s festival saw resident Sally Fowler especially adapting Roald Dahl’s The Minpins.

It was called Billie and The Rhiwbins and the story moved around Rhiwbina with huge crowds joining the parade, including a giant dragon made by some of the children of Llanishen Fach Primary with the help of their teachers.

The rest of the story was acted out in Parc Y Pentre.

There was even a giant swan made using a wheelbarrow and created by committee member Mags.

Sue added: “It takes approximately three months of planning and it’s a very long day for the helpers but its all absolutely worth it.

“We couldn’t do it without the support of the businesses and of course the council, police and St John who are always on hand to help in the planning and on the day. They do a fantastic job.

“On behalf of Rhiwbina Village Events Committee, we would like to thank everyone who came and everyone involved on the day too. It was pretty amazing seeing Rhiwbina so jam-packed.”
