AS football fever sweeps through Wales due to the national side’s success at Euro 2016, a festival of football hit Cardiff.

Teams from across Wales, including Penarth, Cardiff, Barry and as far afield as Swansea, Ceredigion, Gwent and Pembrokeshire, descended on Cardiff Arms Park, the home of Cardiff Blues, for the Cardiff Cup.

The non competitive festival was aimed at under-6 to under-11 age groups and saw more than 180 teams and 1,900 children taking part, playing under the FAW mini football rules.

Team of the day awards went to Under-6 BTM FC, Under-7 Llanrumney Red, Under-8 Treharris FC, Under-9 Island Marine, Under-10 Treharris FC and Under-11 Pentrych Rangers FC for showing the most sportsmanship and enjoyment.

A Cardiff Cup spokesman said: “Cardiff is a city with a proud sporting heritage, hosting some of the biggest sporting events in the world and will be the venue for the 2017 UEFA Champions League final. We can’t thank Cardiff Blues and the Arms Park stadium enough in allowing us to use their historic 12,000 capacity stadium. It was fantastic seeing so many children playing football in a wonderful time for Welsh football.”

Next year the event takes place on July 1 at Cardiff Arms Park. To receive an information and entry pack please email cardiffcup@hotmail.com
