Demolition of eyesore set to begin next month

-

IF YOU’VE been in Cardiff city centre recently, you’ll have noticed more roadworks than usual around one eyesore.

That’s because work is advancing to demolish Marland House and the attached shops which face onto Wood Street.

The demolition of the buildings is to make way for Cardiff’s new bus station.

Work to demolish Marland House started in April.

Since then, mainly internal works has been ongoing.

Utility services have been disconnected and diverted and the interior of the building has been stripped. Asbestos has also been removed. That work is almost finished and next month the works will step up with the demolition itself beginning.

Scaffolding around the site is being increased and will continue for the next two weeks.

It means that the lane nearest the building has been closed off to traffic.

The demolition will begin on Wood Street and then move along the building in October and November, with the council saying it is due to be completed in early December.

Following that, the demolition of the NCP car park is due to commence at the beginning of January.

Cabinet member Ramesh Patel said: “The enabling works to clear the existing site for the new interchange building is progressing well and is on programme.”

The old bus station closed in August last year to allow work to begin on the new BBC headquarters which is being built in Central Square.

The new bus interchange will be built on the site of the former Marland House and NCP car park.

The new bus station is due to open in summer 2018.
