Residents help clean up suburb

-

CANTON & Riverside Grows Wild has launched a project to Clean Up and Green Up the area, thanks to a Postcode Local Trust grant, obtained in conjunction with Cardiff Civic Society.

A recent community litterpick in Craddock Street, Riverside, resulted in two truckloads of rubbish being taken away by Cardiff council.

The project also resulted in raised beds being planted up with pollinatorfriendly plants, to help provide a pollinator corridor for threatened bees.

Twenty-five small planters were also decked with similar plants and placed in front gardens throughout the street.

Tree pits have also been dug in preparation for planting of apple trees and other native species in the autumn, and a community meeting is to be arranged so residents can choose which species they would like in the street.

David Kilner, from Craddock Street, who spearheaded the Clean Up Green Up campaign, said: “Canton and Riverside are high-density urban areas with very little green space. We have got the community involved in creating a far more pleasant environment for everyone to live in, and to turn the area into one that’s attractive to humans and wildlife alike.

“Our aim is to maintain this campaign so that other areas can benefit from flowers and trees.

“The project has also been a huge success in terms of getting the community involved.”
