Journalism course one of best in world

-

JOURNALISM at Cardiff University is officially among the elite, according to the latest world rankings.

It is among more than 40 courses at Welsh universities highly placed in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The QS list is viewed as the definitive guide to the quality of subjects at universities worldwide.

Cardiff University has 30 subjects on the QS list of 46, while Swansea University has seven, Bangor University six and Aberystwyth University four.

At Cardiff 10 subjects are ranked in the top 100, compared to eight in 2016, and 23 subjects are ranked in the top 200 compared to 22 last year.

Journalism is Cardiff’s highest ranked subject – at 34th – and has broken into the world’s top 50 elite institutions in the communication and media studies subject category for the first time.

The rankings are compiled by evaluating 4,438 universities across the world and examining 1,117 institutions.

Professor Stuart Allan, head of Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, said: “The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject confirm our status as one of the world’s leading schools in our subject area.

“The importance of quality journalism for public life is proving to be newsworthy in its own right, what with the fallout from the Leveson Inquiry, the media politics of Brexit, and the emergence of ‘fake news’ and ‘alternative facts’ with the election of President Trump in the US.”

Other Cardiff University subjects to feature highly in this year’s QS World University Rankings 2017 include Architecture and the Built Environment (39th) and Psychology (43rd).
