Families help to clear up tons of waste at estate

-

FAMILIES and children came together to shift three tons of waste from a fly-tipping hotspot in the South Wales Valleys.

The day saw residents living in and around Glyncoch RFC shift the amount, equating to two-and-a-half truck loads, all from the estate.

Local families and more than 20 children attended the event near Pontypridd over half term.

Jayne Carter, community officer at Flytipping Action Wales, said: “We are so grateful to the residents of Glyncoch for their participation in confronting the flytipping issue on site

“It’s such a shame to see commonly used areas like this one be contaminated with hazardous items like sharp metals and household waste – when left unmanaged, it can cause significant harm to the environment.

“As with much of Wales, fly-tipping is a continuous problem in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT), so it’s more important than ever to educate the residents and people of the future the correct ways to dispose of waste responsibly and legally to help make Wales fly-tipping free.

“We were thrilled that the locals made the most of the day by also joining in the free activities we had on offer – residents of RCT are always fantastic at coming together and supporting their community.”

Ms Carter and other members of Flytipping Action Wales and RCT council were also on the scene to guide the clearup and offer advice about how to safely dispose of waste, and help put a stop to the recurring fly-tipping incidents in the area.

Nine-year-old Macey Webb, from Glyncoch, said: “It’s important that we clear all the rubbish up because children might hurt themselves. Lots of my friends come to the RFC so we need to make sure it’s free of waste.”

Tia-Leigh Allen Chown, 13, who also lives nearby, said: “Fly-tipping is bad because it ruins nature, so it’s really important we have clear up days so the animals and environment are protected.”

Litter pickers were also invited to stay for free refreshments from Talbot Green’s Starbucks and Greggs, while children and teenagers took part in the free sporting activities on offer throughout the day with Sport RCT.
