Velindre fundraisers to cycle California

-

CANCER charity Velindre has announced details of its latest overseas challenge.

In September 2018, fundraisers will complete a 600km cycle challenge on the west coast of America.

It see them visit California’s most iconic cities San Francisco and Los Angeles over six days.

The ride will be led by rugby star Jonathan Davies.

Jiffy is the president of Velindre and this is his third bike challenge for the charity.

He will be joined by fellow Wales rugby star Martyn Williams.

Jiffy said: “This will be a very special trip for me and for Martyn Williams as we will be celebrating 10 years of supporting Velindre.

“I’ve done couple of rides before and they are brilliant events, very challenging but great fun, and the camaraderie ensures everyone gets lots of support. And most importantly of all the rides raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for Velindre so that they can continue to provide excellent support for cancer patients and their families in Wales.”

Head of fundraising Andrew Morris said: “As we are cycling to Los Angeles, the City of Angels, it seemed appropriate that the money raised should be used be used to fund Velindre’s very own Angels – our specialist nurses.

“Being diagnosed and dealing with the effects of cancer can be a traumatic time for patients and families; our Specialist Nurses provide the highest level of supportive care when it is most needed. The time a patient first receives the diagnosis of cancer can be a devastating time when the normality of life falls apart.

“To a patient, and their families, the acceptance of this news whilst at the same time being given treatment options can seem overwhelming.

“Our specialist nurses can help to tailor the delivery of such information to the individual patient’s needs, where necessary contacting the patients outside of the busy clinical environment. Access to this one to one personalised approach to care should be available to all cancer patients and their families in Wales”.
