Good Evans bags bream of the crop to land his team a top-three finish

WELSH Internatio­nal team member Nigel Evans, from Porthcawl, has been fishing for the Preston Innovation­s team in the Gloucester Canal Spring League and he did well in the final match to weigh in 11lb 10oz of bream to finish sixth on the day and also help his team to third place overall.

The first of the Pontymiste­r AC evening matches on the canal at Cross Keys was won at Hall’s Road, where Welsh Internatio­nal John Harvey, from Risca, used punched bread to catch small roach all through the three hours and win with 6lb 13oz.

Runner up Steve Goodwin caught his 3lb 8oz of roach on maggots and Mike Martin was third with 3lb 3oz.

Pontymiste­r AC members were at Mathern Mill for the club’s away fixture.

Carp on pellet baits decided the result with a couple of near double figures helping Tim Jones to first place with 73lb 7oz.

Another Cross Keys angler Phil Thomas finished runner-up with 51lb 12oz and in third place with 41lb 6oz was Geraint House.

Saturday at Cefn Mably Lakes was another success for caster fishing specialist Phil Weaver as he out-performed a near sell-out entry for the open fixture on the Match Lake with a weight of 148lb.

Nick Bevan was his closest challenger with 136lb while Brian King, from Ebbw Vale, had the third best weight of 96lb 10oz.

Cardiff Nomads member Richard Candy took the silver fish pool with 9lb 8oz.

The Sunday open at Redhill was pegged on both Sophie’s and Penny’s Pond with the latter producing all the top weights led by on-form Phil Weaver, from Newport, who used worms and casters to catch 131lb of carp.

Adrian Mann claimed second place for Blaina with 104lb 10oz; but he only just made it as Ebbw Vale competitor Brian King was just 10oz behind.

Cefn Fforest AC paid a visit to Gloucester­shire and the lake at Turley Court where the carp turned out in force and there were a number of 100lb plus catches.

Ray McDonnell, from Cefn Fforest, had the most as his keepnets held a total weight of 160lb that had fallen for pieces of luncheon meat on the hook.

Lyn Jones, from Cefn Hengoed, saw his carp catch weigh 140lb for second place while 137lb put Gafyn Jones in third place.

The carp weren’t quite so keen to play ball at Redhill Fishery where most of the Iffers AC line up on Penny’s Pond had to work hard to get bites.

Bert Sutton did it best to win with 69lb 2oz and after that it was Mark Wellington with 53lb 3oz and Gerwyn Wilkins with 49lb 7oz.

Cardiff member Keith Wilcox has now won three of the nine Sirhowy AS matches this year after his 110lb 6oz of carp caught on pole and pellets made him number one in the match on Penny’s Pond at Redhill Fishery.

By finishing second with 104lb 1oz Phil Weaver maintained his comfortabl­e lead in the club championsh­ip table while Nigel Morris made it to third place with 103lb 4oz.

Carlo Bertorelli, from Cwmbran, added another over-50s win to the year’s tally when his 72lb net of carp was top score among the Wednesday gathering at Cefn Mably Lakes.

Cardiff’s Robert Michael was runner up again missing out by one pound and Glamorgan AC member Mick Fraser third with 61lb.

Dennis O’Leary carried on his weekly winning of the silver fish pool with 17lb 4oz of roach and bream.

The midweek entry at Mathern Mill had to give best to Tredegar competitor Sean McCarthy as he pole fished pellets at peg 20 for a 67lb catch of carp. Second placed Norman Sterry weighed in 50lb and Graham Davies, from Cefn Coed, was third with 37lb 11oz.

Carp fed for the Wednesday match on the Match Lake at White Springs as Dan Bowen got the lion’s share from peg 19 and won the day with a total weight of 130lb 2oz.

Second best was Scott Odam, from Bridgend, with 101lb 10oz and third Andy Rogers with 96lb 7oz.

The action moved to the New Canal for the Sunday Open and it was venue ace Alan Godrich out front again, this time with 98lb 12oz of carp on pole and worms.

Well beaten with 47lb 8oz in second place was Steve Beresford while Lou Spinks made third place with 44lb 10oz.

Andy Price, from Newport, topped the weights in the first of the Newport AA Wednesday evening open matches held on School Pool.

He drew peg 48 and fished to the lilies for a mainly carp catch that reached 48lb.

Rob Sims, from Cwmcarn and the club’s Match Secretary, was on peg 39 and second with 32lb while Bargoed competitor Chris Murphy filled third place with 31lb.

Casters on the hook and fished close to the near bank was Rob Dyer’s winning approach to the Spencer Works AC match on Tilley’s Pond and
