Morrison signs new City deal as Zohore vows to stay

-

CARDIFF City captain Sean Morrison has ended speculation over his future by signing a new three-year deal to remain with the Bluebirds until 2020.

The 26-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Cardiff City Stadium this summer, with the Bluebirds’ Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday previously showing interest in the centre-back.

The Owls had a bid believed to be in the region of £3m for Morrison turned down by the Bluebirds, although Hillsborough boss Carlos Carvalhal admitted earlier this week that he was still in the hunt for centrehalves.

But Morrison has put an end to speculation over his future by putting pen to paper on new terms with the Bluebirds.

He joins fellow centre-back Bruno Manga in signing a new deal ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, while Kadeem Harris, Junior Hoilett and Lee Peltier have also agreed fresh terms over the summer.

Morrison said: “Fortunately, it’s been quite easy going – I made it clear that I wanted to stay at Cardiff City and the ‘Gaffer’ told me he wanted me. I’m absolutely delighted to be here for the next three years.

“Our form towards the end of last year showed what we’re capable of as a team and hopefully we can take that straight into the new season.”

Warnock added: “You’ve got to take your hat off to Sean. He could have moved on having been made quite a lucrative offer, but he told me, ‘I don’t want to, Gaffer – I think there’s something special happening here.’

“He thinks we could really do something next season and that shows great commitment to the club and where we are right now.”

The Plymouth-born centre-back joined the Bluebirds from Reading in 2014 and has been a mainstay at the heart of the Bluebirds’ defence during his three years in south Wales.

Following the departure of goalkeeper David Marshall last summer, Morrison was handed the captain’s armband on a permanent basis having previously led the side in his second campaign at the club.

Meanwhile, striker Kenneth Zohore has vowed to stay at Cardiff despite reported summer interest from a number of clubs.

The striker hit 12 goals for the Bluebirds last season despite only coming into the side in December.

“There has apparently been interest in me from a couple of clubs, but I am happy with Cardiff City,” Zohore said. “I want to stay. I will be staying.

“I’m happy with how things are going,” he added.

“I’m happy when I score whether it’s in a friendly or the Championship.

“My target is to score a lot more in the coming season. We are giving it a real go for promotion this season and I want to be part of that.

“It’s good to have options in attack with new signings Danny Ward and Lee Tomlin,” he said, when asked about Warnock’s summer acquisitions. “They are quality players and I’m hoping they will feed me and help me score more goals.

“A year ago I didn’t have a good preseason and didn’t really play for six months. This time I’m working hard preparing for the challenge and feeling good,” he told Dai Sport.
