AN ARRIVA Trains Wales worker is in a serious condition in hospital after being struck by a BMW fleeing from police in the centre of Cardiff.

The man was struck by a grey car in a suspected hit and run incident in the centre of the city yesterday.

Police were last night looking for the driver of a grey BMW, which was trying to get away from police at the time of the crash in Wood Street and which failed to stop after the man was hit.

The car was later found abandoned nearby.

Wood Street, between the Principality Stadium and Cardiff Central train station, was closed as police officers and paramedics treated the man at the scene on the corner of Wood Street and Scott Road.

An Arriva Trains Wales spokesman said the injured man was a member of their staff and his family had been informed.

A spokesman for the company said: “Our thoughts are with him and his family at this time. We are all wishing him a speedy recovery.”

An eyewitness said they saw a car coming from the direction of St Mary Street, on the side of Wood Street that is open during ongoing works.

The witness said a man was hit at the traffic lights just before the bridge over the Taff. It happened at around 11.49am. Another witness, Byte IT Ltd chief executive Dafydd S Jones, saw the incident from his office at One Central Square.

He reported seeing a “heavy police presence” with at least seven police vehicles in attendance.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “The man involved – a pedestrian – has been taken to hospital with serious injuries where he currently remains.

“The grey BMW involved in the collision failed to stop at the scene.

“It is understood that moments before the collision the vehicle made off from police officers who then lost sight of the vehicle.

“It was abandoned in Tudor Street, Riverside, and has been recovered by officers.

“Officers are now looking for two suspects believed to have been in the vehicle at the time of the collision.”

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Trust said a paramedic in a rapid response car, a crew in an emergency ambulance, and a doctor were sent, adding: “We were called shortly before midday to reports of a road traffic accident involving a car and a pedestrian on Central Square in Cardiff.”

Anybody who has information in relation to the incident is asked to contact South Wales Police via 101 quoting reference *290230 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
