THREE Caerphilly county borough schools have achieved awards which demonstrate the excellent work they do to promote healthy living.

Cwmaber Infants School and Cwrt Rawlin Primary School have both achieved the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Schemes’ highest accolade – the National Quality Award.

Both schools have been working towards this award for more than nine years, ensuring that health and wellbeing is embedded across the whole school.

To achieve this prestigious award, both schools had to undergo a twoday verification process, which was carried out by Public Health Wales. Throughout these two days, the schools showcased all the excellent work they do to promote healthy living.

Cwmaber Infants School was highly commended for its promotion of mental health and well-being, in which the school motto “learn, care and share” was imbedded throughout the school environment.

Cwrt Rawlin Primary School was highly commended on all the work it does to promote living active lifestyles. Pupils are encouraged to eat healthily through a range of curriculum activities.

The school has also been rewarded by Sustrans for promoting active travel, with a large number of pupils cycling to school.

Head teacher Tara Lloyd said: “Our pupils have led a number of initiatives, including making fruit smoothies, working with Sustrans to improve the way we travel to school, growing our own vegetables and our next project includes building a plastic and ecofriendly bottle greenhouse.

“We would to thank the governors, staff, children and parents for their support as we made a number of significant changes to make our school an even healthier place. We will continue to work hard to develop as a healthy school by embedding further ideas, with pupil voice and wellbeing at the heart of everything we do.”

Cwm Glas Infants School also achieved the Healthy Schools Local Phase 6 award for its work on promoting healthy living.

Cabinet member for education and achievement, Coun Philippa Marsden said: “Congratulations must go to all the pupils, staff and parents from each of these schools.”
