Cardiff Sixth Form – Top Independent School in the UK 2017
CARDIFF Sixth Form College has again been ranked the Top Independent School in the UK by The Times for 2017. 91% of students achieved A*-A grades and 99% A*-B and 19 have confirmed Oxbridge places.
The college fuses Eastern and Western philosophies of education and students are focused, disciplined, supported and encouraged to reach beyond their academic horizons and strive for the best results possible.
Teaching staff are all highly experienced with many having been examiners or inspectors in other schools. Highly rated by the pupils, staff offer one-to-one support, tutorials and academic enrichment on top of their extensive teaching programme.
A designated careers team at the college drive and reinforce student passion for learning with excellent careers guidance, Ucas support, entrance to US and other international universities, lectures and work experience programmes.
Results are tremendous. This year 47 students will be going on to study medicine or dentistry, with biomedical sciences, economics, engineering and law the next highest university placements. In terms of destinations, 18 have Oxbridge places, 20 at University College London and 27 to London School of Economics with 100% gaining places at the top Russell Group universities.

Cardiff Sixth Form College also offers a wide range of extra and super-curricular activities. Students take part in volunteering and international work experience programmes as well as academic competitions including chemistry Olympiads, debating, mathematical challenges and the prestigious Imperial College’s space design awards. There are also whole college events each term including sports day, the cultural event and a drama production, sport, art, D of E, debating, journalism and philosophy clubs and boarding trips during the weekends.
Student horizons are broadened by a variety of academic, cultural and career trips including observing cutting-edge science at CERN, visiting the crown courts for potential lawyers and hospitals for medics as well as cultural visits to historic cities such as Stratford-Upon-Avon and London.
Encouraged to undertake selfstudy, students can also do online courses in their chosen fields and university modules and with all students given practice in critical thinking, as well as extra tutor support, they are prepared for the various entry requirements of tests such as BMAT, LNAT and TSA and are able to compete for the most sought-after places at top universities.
