THE next big date on the beach angling calendar is Sunday, November 12 when Penarth SAC hosts the annual open competition on the pier and beach.

As well as the £600 winner’s purse donated by regular supporters Admiral Insurance the 11.30am to 3.30pm fixture also has Garry Evans Seamaster points for the top 20 competitors.

Positions on the pier are limited and can be booked with Secretary Bob Galley from Sunday.

Anglers with one dogfish and one conger took all the prizes at the end of the Newport and District SAC roving competition.

Gethin Lovell’s conger was by far the largest and added to the dogfish came to a winning 6.37kg.

The next two caught much more slimline eels.

Runner up Andy Clark made 1.26kg with his and just behind was Gareth Mutlow with 1.20kg.

The next club competition is on Sunday from 10.30am to 4.30pm at Redwick.

Gwent and District SAC members were also roving and most of the action came Swansea way where three anglers with five dogfish apiece took the prizes.

Neil Owen just got ahead when his fish added up to 3.27kg; Ivor Smith’s weighed 3.07kg and Dave Hemmings had the third best weight of 2.86kg.

Brendan Davies kept up his good run in the Penarth SAC competitions by winning the latest with a conger that weighed 8lb 15oz and was caught from the pier.

Also on the pier was runner up Adrian Collins who earned second prize by catching a 5lb 9oz conger and then it was near the outfall for the next two weights, Billy Niblett’s two congers weighing 2lb 11oz and the 2lb 6oz conger caught by Adam Farmer. THE Cardiff Nomads A Team got off to a good start in the Wye League by finishing in third place in the opening round at Hereford. They totalled 50 section points behind ABC Baits with 51 and winners, from Redditch, Shakespeare, with 53.

Nomads team man Kevin Ellerby was a section winner and second in the individual result with 39lb 2oz; Clive Branson won his section with 7lb 15oz and Clive Roberts was second in his section with 8lb 7oz.

Cwmbran Angling Nobblers member Rob Skellett was the winner of the fourth in the sixmatch Newport Autumn Series at Woodstock Pond. He drew fancied peg 86 on the point and used pole and worms to catch 24lb 8oz of bream.

Newport feeder expert John Mack also used worms as bait to net 23lb 8oz for second place and then came Darrel Barnes with 21lb 9oz and Cwmbran river specialist Martin Challenger showing his still water credentials in fourth with a pole caught 18lb 3oz.

Section prizes went to Nick Jones with 13lb 1oz and Rob Sims with 12lb 12oz.

Sean Wilson, from Trethomas, made it two wins in a row at Tri-Nant Fishery when his 15lb of roach was the best catch in the Tuesday silver fish match. It was also roach for runner up Mick Fraser with 7lb 2oz and third placed Steve Taylor with 6lb 11oz.

Ian Swanson, from Ebbw Vale, travelled to Worcestershire to take part in the mid week open at Woodland View Fishery and returned victorious after taking the 53lb 8oz winning catch.

Bill Gronow, from Cwmbran, added another win in the over 50s matches at Cefn Mably Lakes to his collection when his 75lb 8oz of carp caught on legered pellets was the best from the Wednesday entry.

Second place went to Cardiff when Dave Pike put 71lb of carp on the scales while 65lb 8oz put Larry Salter, from Ebbw Vale, in third place and Steve Jones won the silver fish pool with 10lb 8oz of roach and bream.

It was another regular winner in first place in the other Wednesday fixture, the open match at Redhill Fishery.

Sophie’s and Molly’s ponds were pegged to accommodate the growing entry and Mike Yandle, from Tredegar, beat them all with 127lb 5oz of carp caught on pole and pellets from peg 16 on Sophie’s.

The runner up was another angler rarely out of the money, Pontllanfraith’s Howard Green with 113lb 10oz from Molly’s and it was the same pond that provided Ian Sutton with the third best weight of 95lb 15oz.

The Wednesday open at White Springs was on the Match Lake and won by Jim Hart with 72lb of carp and bream. Merthyr competitor Paddy Payne was runner up yet again with 72lb 2oz and Hugh Scott third with 59lb 12oz.

Having the wind coming from behind helped Dean Jay, from Dinas Powys, to another win with Glamorgan AC when the club fished on the Match Lake at Cefn Mably. He pole fished pellets and caught 59lb 12oz of carp while across the lake with the wind in his face Rhiwbina member Russell Palmer made it to second place with 40lb 10oz. Third placed Mal Entwistle weighed in 32lb and section prizes went to Steve Cother with 25lb and John Cox with 21lb.

The wind and rain took the edge off sport for Last Cast AC fishing the Match Lake at White Springs and a lower than expected 27lb 6oz of carp put Daffyd Davies in first place ahead of Ivan Phillips with 26lb 10oz and Steve Morris with 23lb 8oz.
