Trader fears ‘new’ paving a trip hazard

-

A BUSINESSMAN has criticised “dangerous” council regeneration works.

The council ploughed money into regenerating Birchgrove by improving pavements, pedestrian crossings and the appearance of the area in 2016.

But now local businesses say that they are coming apart and are dangerous.

Paul Clough, 49, runs Youngers Fish Bar, in Caerphilly Road, and has complained to the council after spotting areas where worked loose.

He says that not only does it look poor, it could also result in people getting hurt.

Mr Clough said: “There are two places that are absolutely dreadful.

“There’s one area that’s bad at the end of the street by the Birchgrove pub. It’s making the area look dreadful. The council has done nothing about it and it was reported on December 14, we expect better.

“You don’t expect this to happen after two years.

“They should be stuck solid. paving stones have

“There are a lot of elderly people here and it’s dangerous as someone could fall. “It’s a real danger for people.” Mr Clough said it “looks bad” but his main concern is the danger involved.

A spokesman for Cardiff Council said: “These paving stones are designed to sit on sand which are levelled when they are installed.

“We ask people not to lift up the paving stones, as this will disturb the base of sand which is underneath.

“A safety inspector will visit to ensure that the stone pavement is level and if any remedial work is required, this will be carried out.”
