Yandle in at the deep another Wednesday

GARRY Evans Seamaster points are awaiting the top 20 competitor­s in the annual Gwent and District SAC Open Competitio­n at St Brides on Sunday, April 29.

The fishing is from 6pm to 9.30pm along a stretch of foreshore from Peterstone Gout to the white lighthouse and booking in starts at 1pm at Peterstone Lakes.

First prize is £300 donated by Family Finance Ltd and the runner up will receive the £200 Mark Newman Memorial Prize. There is a Sonik SK4 rod donated by Garry Evans Tackle for third prize and after another seventeen including tackle and cash vouchers.

The juniors have prizes of £50, £30 and £20 donated by Paul Osmond Transport.

Entry to the competitio­n is £9 and there is a £1 pool split between the top two bag weights.

The weigh-in is at Peterstone Lakes where the scales close at 10.30pm and more informatio­n is available from Neil Owen on 07810 037276.

Members of Penygraig SAC found plenty of fish waiting when they took part in a boat competitio­n and Robert Young, from Treorchy, had a busy day boating and returning dogfish, bull huss, smooth hounds and conger eels as he built up a 234 points winning score.

Cardiff member Andy Kimber also caught the same four species to take second place with 194 points while dogfish, conger and smooth hounds were reeled up by Tonyrefail angler Roger Saunders to give him third prize with a total of 190 points.

Two cod, a conger eel and a rockling made up Keith Skipper’s winning 3.71kg when he took part in the Gwent and District SAC competitio­n at Sully.

One conger of 2.27kg gave second prize to Craig Maddox while Mike Mather was third thanks to a 0.55kg cod.

Joe Deandrade made it two wins on the trot with Penarth SAC when he caught rays weighing 7lb and 3lb from the pier. Catches were much better than of late as Mark Williams , also on the pier, caught a 3lb 12oz ray for second place and at Ranny Pool Brian Lewis beached a 2lb 10oz conger for third and Derek Sidaway was fourth with one that weighed 1lb 1oz. MIKE Yandle, from Tredegar, was the winner yet again when the Wednesday open at Redhill Fishery was held on Penny’s Pond.

He drew a fancied peg at the deeper end and used pole and pellets to net 60lb 10oz of carp.

Merthyr competitor Paddy Payne was facing him on the opposite bank where he caught 54lb 14oz of carp for second place and the same area provided Trealaw angler Alan Davies with 49lb 12oz for third place and Rob Dyer’s fourth best 48lb.

Paddy Payne moved up one place at the weekend when he was among the Aberglais AC members fishing at Herefordsh­ire venue Pixley Pool.

He won comfortabl­y with 142lb 7oz of carp to over 15lb caught on pole fished casters.

Mark Williams, from Abertysswg, was the closest behind him with 87lb 3oz and then came Merthyr anglers Gary Lewis with 49lb 4oz and Frank Davies with 42lb 8oz.

Sirhowy AS headed for Redhill and a Sunday club match on Tilley’s Pond where Nigel Morris fished pellets at 4 metres and 16 metres and finished with a catch of carp that weighed 92lb 14oz.

Phil Weaver, from Newport, concentrat­ed his efforts at 16 metres out and wasn’t too far behind with 89lb 14oz.

Tredegar tackle dealer Mark Jones was third with 65lb 4oz and Joel Worgan fourth with 62lb 14oz.

A couple of good sized bream caught on feeder tackle and maggots as bait helped Steve Burge to a winning 11lb 8oz in the Forest of Dean Open at Steam Mills Lake.

One bream and some small roach gave Bernie Fraser 6lb 2oz and second place and 4lb was enough to put Lee Thomas in third place.

Aiden Williams, from Newport, continues to be the best performing young angler on the local match circuit as he demonstrat­ed by winning the fourth round of the Newport Spring League on School Pool.

He was on peg 62 in the back bay where he switched between feeder and pole tackle and caught F1 carp for a top weight of 39lb.

Mark Barrel was on peg 33 in the open water where his 34lb 7oz of carp put him in second place and the club’s Match Secretary Rob Sims was third with 29lb 10z. The section winners were Dennis O’Leary, from Ebbw Vale, with 29lb 6oz and Newport angler Karl Guerra with 19lb 8oz.

Craig Cox, a club member who lives in the Forest of Dean, travelled to Cefn Mably Lakes and won the Cefn Fforest AC match with 90lb 3oz of carp.

Second placed Dwayne Boyall lives at Cefn Fforest and caught 85lb 15oz while current Welsh National Champion Zac Williams, from the same town, was third with 82lb 6oz.

Only small bream and roach showed up during a rain hit Iffers AC match at Hartleton Lake as Gordon Emms caught 10lb 4oz to win and Darren Saunders 9lb 2oz to take second place.

Alan Godrich was back on the winner’s track in the latest open match at White Springs Fishery when he caught 79lb 8oz of carp and bream from the New Canal.

Well beaten with 45lb 8oz was Ryan Dummer and then came Mick Brown in third place with 34lb 10oz.

Sirhowy AS members took a fair chunk of the prize money at Somerset’s Viaduct Fishery although local rod Dave Cockayne won with 140lb 4oz of carp.

Adam Mitchell, from Tredegar, was in second place with 136lb 5oz and Dan Bowen third with 121lb 7oz.

Sean Wilson, from Trethomas, collected the top payout from the silver fish pool by catching 30lb 8oz of roach and bream.

South Wales anglers also made their mark on the open match weekend at Weston Pools near Oswestry.

Ian Exall, from Blackwood, was third on the first day with 48lb 10oz of carp on sweetcorn and pellets from a peg on Stretton Pool while Cwmbran angler Neil Dibble was fourth with more carp and 42lb 8oz.

Just nine carp caught on float fished bread in Stretton Pool made up the 62lb that put Bob Giles in second place on the second day and his Cefn Fforest AC club mate Martin Thomas was
