- MARCUS HUGHES Reporter marcus.hughes@walesonline.co.uk

A THOUSAND fundraisers are being given the chance to bag a free spot on the start line of this summer’s Race for Life in Cardiff.

Tesco and the South Wales Echo have teamed up to offer 1,000 free entries to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 5k event.

The first 1,000 women to sign up for the run, which takes place on Sunday, July 15, at Cooper’s Field in Bute Park, on the Tesco website, will be given a free place. Entry normally costs £14.99 for women.

Tesco group communications director Jane Lawrie said: “Race for Life brings together hundreds of thousands of people across the UK who are all committed to raising money to support life-saving cancer research. We’re proud to be the official partner for the 17th year.

“We’re giving away 1,000 free places in Cardiff so that we can help get even more women involved.

“Whether they choose to walk, jog or run around the course, every little step helps. Our colleagues can’t wait to join everyone at the start line again this year.”

Race for Life started as a single event in 1994 at Battersea Park in London with 680 participants.

It is now one of the largest fundraising series in the UK with 380 separate races annually.

Emily Smith, head of events marketing for Cancer Research UK, said: “We’d like to thank Tesco for their continued support and we hope that women in Cardiff are inspired to join the fight at Race for Life.

“By signing up to Race for Life, women can make a real difference in the fight against cancer.

“Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists and doctors find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives.

“By taking their place at the start line, women can unite against a disease that affects us all in some way.”

Tryst Williams, editor of the South Wales Echo, said: “Every family across South Wales will have been affected by cancer in some way – whether through a personal diagnosis, or through the experiences of friends, relatives and loved ones.

“This event is an important way of showing how determined people across the region are to fight this terrible disease, and how, by standing united, we can raise funds for the work of this vital charity.

“We’re delighted to be involved, with Tesco, in giving away these 1,000 free places. So, if you’re thinking of taking part, please sign up today.”
