Lucky seven has Ben doing the conger!

TREDEGAR member Mike Yandle drew end peg 40 on the New Canal at White Springs and put it to good use by netting 142lb 8oz of carp for a comfortabl­e win in the Sirhowy AS match.

He pole fished at 6m and also tight against the near bank and caught his fish on casters.

Danny Baker made it a Tredegar top two with 94lb 2oz. He used a 14m long pole to reach the edge of the island and baited with sweetcorn.

Phil Weaver, from Newport, fished close in with casters and had a 93lb 2oz mixture of roach and bream for third place while Nigel Morris remains at the top of the Club Champion points table after coming fourth with 83lb 8oz of carp caught on pellets fished to the island.

Yandle was also in winning form in the mid week open at Redhill Fishery.

There were six weights over 100lb in the open match on Sophie’s Pond, but his 327lb 10oz of carp on pole and sweetcorn was by far the best.

Duane Boyal, from Cefn Fforest, was on peg 2 and was second with 233lb 4oz of carp and after that came Ian Sutton and Bryan King with 132lb and 126lb 15oz.

The Pirates AC weekly match at White Springs was on the New Canal and won by Rob White with an all carp 98lb 8oz. Alan Godrich made his regular appearance in the prize list with a second best 70lb 8oz and Jim Hutton was third with 66lb 4oz.

The weekend open on the Match Lake at White Springs was won by Chris Wells who pole fished pellets across to the edge of the island where he found 107lb 10oz of carp and bream.

Neil Daniels, in second place, caught 79lb 12oz of carp and beat Chris Oag with 86lb 14oz.

A feeder fished from peg 18 by Shaun Parsons found the Port Talbot Docks bream and gave him another win at the increasing­ly popular £5 day ticket venue.

His 46lb 2oz beat fellow Cardiff Nomad Clive Roberts who pole fished his way to 39lb 3oz of roach and Welsh National Champion Zak Williams in third place with 33lb 15oz. A BREEZY west/south west wind made water conditions ideal for the fifth round of the East Region Shore League at Sully and Bendricks, but fishing was patchy and Sully Island the most productive section of the match length.

Ben Davies of the Garry Evans Match Team fished the sloping ledge on the right hand side of the island and was the individual winner with seven conger eels weighing 6.28kg.

He took the £90 first prize and added £54 from the most fish pool.

His team mate Chris Read was also on the island where he reeled in five congers weighing 9.32kg for second place and £55.

Current Seamaster Champion Rory Jenkins, fishing for Sakuma Match Team, was third with three congers and a dogfish weighing 9.06kg.

Adam Farmer, fishing for the Holton Road Match Team, caught a 3kg bass and added a conger to finish fourth with7.30kg while South Wales Matchmen team member Joe Arch was among the front runners again with a 6.50kg smooth hound that put him in fifth place.

The Best Species pool money - £106 after being carried forward from round four - was won by Dave Llewelyn of the Holton Road Match Team with a 0. 63kg cod.

Winning team on the day was Garry Evans Match Team with 448 fish points followed by Holton Road Match Team with 412 fish points; Sakuma Match Team with 350 and Gwent Beer Bellies with 338.

This is the closest event for a number of years as the South Wales Match Team go into the final round with 44 team points.

The Sakuma Match Team has 43; the Garry Evans Match Team is in third place with 42 team points and Gwent Beer Bellies fourth with 41.

Rory Jenkins is leading the individual table with 380 points with Ben Davies nearest with 366 and Shaun Tucker third with 355 points.

The sixth and final competitio­n in this well supported series will be at Ogmore and Porthcawl on Sunday, December 16.

The next big day on the beach competitio­n calendar is Sunday, October 7 when the East Region WFSA Barry Angling Festival takes place from 10am to 3pm at Cold Knap and Porthkerry.

The festival is open to any angler and there are some great prizes starting with a £500 winner’s purse.

The competitio­n incorporat­es the final of the Garry Evans Fishing Tackle Seamaster Championsh­ip as the 20 finalists fish against each other with the heaviest catch taking the Seamaster title.

The Festival is also the first qualifier for next year’s Seamaster with points going to the top 20 on the result sheet.

The second opportunit­y to pick up points after that comes on Sunday, November 18 at the Penarth SAC Open Competitio­n.

The 6.32kg conger beached by Roy Tapper not only made the Cardiff based member of Newport and District SAC the winner of the club competitio­n at St Brides but won the snowball to give him an extra £100.

A thornback ray and an eel put Rob Guscott in second place with 4.10kg and Club Secretary Tony Hart was third with a 3.02kg conger.

The club is in action at Coronation Park on Sunday with a competitio­n from 10am to 2pm.

Mike Mather, from Cardiff, reeled in four almost matching conger eels to win the Gwent and District SAC competitio­n at Sully with 3.99kg.

Risca member Rob Evans caught two congers weighing 2.40kg for second place and Neil Evans was third with a conger and a silver eel weighing 1.81kg.

Two anglers who live in the valley village led the weights when Penygraig SAC members lined up on the beach at Ogmore.

Alan Jones winning catch was a 3.40kg small eyed ray and Alan Maskray caught and released a 1.40kg bass. It was also a bass, this time weighing 1.20kg, for Llantwit Fardre member Mal Hughes in third place with 1.20kg.
